Classroom Management for Teaching Preschool EFL and ESL Udemy Course

Ideas & Skills for Success with Preschoolers

Do you want to have orderly classes filled with happy children learning and practicing English?

My absolute favorite age group to teach is preschool children between the ages of 3 and 6 years old. Nowhere else do I get to sing as many songs, play as many games, be as silly, or just have as much fun as when I’m with little learners. They bring tons of energy, enthusiasm, and openness to learning. Honestly, I can’t begin to recall how many times I left my lessons with them feeling happier and more energized than when I started my lessons.

It wasn’t always that way, though. When I first started with this age group more than 15 years ago I found them to be confusing, frustrating, and exhausting. And they didn’t like me very much either. I just didn’t know what to do with them. And unfortunately, at the time, there weren’t many resources online for me to access. I struggled with them for months and months without much satisfaction.

The truth is that teaching preschool children (ages 3 to 6 years old) is a unique, challenging, but also extremely rewarding part of the EFL/ESL industry. The students in this age group are very different from adults, teens, and even primary school children. So, we need multiple skill sets of specialized ideas and techniques that are best suited for this age group.

One critical skill set is for effective classroom management. This keeps our classes organized so students know what do and how to succeed so everyone can have a great time in class. And, it is especially important in English as a Foreign/Second Language (EFL/ESL) classes because our children are learning in a language they don’t understand and often with cultural differences on top of that.

Sadly, though, most general English teacher training programs (CELTA, TESOL, TEFL) don’t spend any time on preschool children or even much time on classroom management. Maybe they include the basics like how to teach vocabulary and grammar, how to write a lesson plan, and some games and activities – but are those even appropriate for very young children? What does a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) say about how to keep a classroom filled with twenty 3 year-olds learning and behaving well?

For more than a decade I’ve worked with hundreds of teachers who wanted to improve their teaching and classroom management skills . They were frustrated because they weren’t able to achieve everything they wanted in their classes. Sometimes they had noisy, chaotic classrooms or students who couldn’t focus. Other times they just seemed to run out of time because it took so long to organize activities. Or they wanted to get students to put in more effort.

And I know how they were feeling because I felt that exact frustration many years ago as a new teacher.

Fortunately, after years of experience, research, and practice, I’ve found a set of practical ideas and techniques that have helped me and hundreds of other teachers organize our classes and enjoy better lessons. These ideas are focused on understanding our students’ needs and abilities, and then using effective techniques to meet those needs and use those abilities so children behave well in our classes.

Now, I’ve developed a classroom management course on the popular learning site, Udemy.com to share these ideas with you in an easily accessible format.
