Teaching Teens EFL in Public School Workshops

Teaching teens in large secondary or high school classrooms is an incredibly challenging environment for many new teachers. Students in these schools aren’t young children but they also aren’t adults. Therefore, games and techniques that work in primary school won’t work in secondary. New teachers need to have the required tools to work with teens, otherwise they risk losing control of their classes and failing to educate their students.

This 4.5 hour workshop gives teachers an all-around introduction to the basic skills needed for success in Vietnamese secondary school and high schools (Grades 6-12). By the end of the workshop teachers will have:

  • Development & Needs: a summary of their physical, emotional, social, and intellectual changes and needs and how this affects lessons
  • Causes of Misbehavior: a discussion of possible causes of misbehavior to help understand teens

Classroom Management

  • Great Teacher Traits: discussion to identify key traits of great teachers of teens
  • Principles: 15 principles for effective classroom management
  • Techniques: more than 70 ideas and techniques for improving student behavior in class
  • Needs & Interests Survey: creating and conducting a short student survey

Lesson Planning

  • Principles: key ideas for how to motivate teens in class and organize their lessons
  • Stages: how to structure lessons in public school for learning
  • Eliciting and Presenting Vocabulary: different methods for eliciting and presenting vocabulary with teens

Activities

  • Principles: five key ideas for effective activities with teens
  • Effective Activities: reviewing and playing 12 activities that work well with large classes of teens
  • Review Project: creating a short project to review core lessons from the workshop
