3 Easy and Fun TEFL Drilling Techniques for Kids English

Have fun with your students with these three TEFL drilling techniques

In my observations I often see that one of the lowest points of a lesson is the drilling phase. Teachers spend a few minutes, or even more, dragging their students through multiple rounds of blandly repeating some words or phrases with less and less energy and enthusiasm as the minutes tick by. Towards the end, many students are mentally checked out and ready for something else. I then often watch as the rest of the lesson breaks down because the teacher is trying to recover what they lost early on while drilling. It doesn’t have to be like this. Instead, here are three easy and fun TEFL drilling techniques that will energize and excite your students while you get in some quick repetition practice.

In this video, you’ll see drilling techniques that work great with children ages 3 to 11 years old. You’ll also get tips for how to use them successfully.

First, I’ll show you Volume Drilling which is a great way to burn off a little extra energy. A couple rounds will really wake your students up!

Second, I’ll show you Emotions Drilling to get your students laughing and practicing how to use emotional tones in English pronunciation. In my lessons they especially love “angry” and “sad” tones.

Finally, I’ll demonstrate Silly Voices Drilling which is also great fun for students. There are so many to choose from; baby voice, granny voice, pirate voice, and more!

And, while you’re at it, don’t forget to include gestures in all your drills! These help students understand what you’re intending and make everything more exciting and engaging as well.
