Have you ever had a class that’s all worked up and in need of a quiet activity to calm them down? As a teacher, I’ve certainly had those moments after a really exciting game or song. My students were all pumped up and in danger of getting out of hand. Fortunately, I always have a quick and easy activity to settle my students while also practicing their pronunciation skills. It’s called Lip Reading and it’s a great game to keep in your bag of activities for quick emergencies or for filling lesson gaps.

In this video I describe how to play the game with your students and give a short demonstration as well. Can you read my lips and guess the words and sentences? It might be a bit difficult at first, but with practice everyone quickly gets better.
I also look at why this game is effective for young EFL students, including how it’s good for improving pronunciation and how it makes use of a skill your students already have from learning their native language.
I’ll also provide a few final tips for how you can get the most out of Lip Reading. This game is great for the whole class, and you can break students into small groups for even more lip reading action.
